Sun Tzu Wrote The Art of War over 2,500 Years Ago

The Art of War was written by a Chinese general named Sun Tzu more than 2,500 years ago, possibly in the 6th Century BC. The book has long been heralded for its advice on military success.

Given, that at the time of writing this Substack post, we are so clearly at war, with something invisible and diabolical. I thought I would do a short series on War, as a preparation before going further into what may have happened in the Lahaina, Maui, inferno.

What better place to start than with Sun Tzu?
To first build some context and foundation.

The Art of War, long heralded for its advice on military success. This advice has since been co-opted by legions of armchair soldiers and generals in the business world.

If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the result of 100 battles. If you know yourself, but not the enemy, for every victory gained, you will also suffer a defeat if you know neither the enemy nor yourself. You will succumb in every battle. - Sun Tzu

Here are THE KEY POINTS - see article for further elaboration of each point, on translating business tactics from The Art of War book.

1. On Management: Care about your team but also be tough

2. On Management: Hire great people because weak frustrated sub ordinance will cripple you.

3. On Strategy: Know your enemy.

4. On Tactics: All warfare is based on deception.

5. On Tactics: Be decisive and quick.

6. On Tactics: Exploit your enemy's weaknesses, avoid their strengths.

7. On Tactics: Don't just do something for the sake of doing something. Make sure it helps you.

8. On Tactics: Plan ahead - don't make it up as you go.

9. Warning: Don't attack someone just because they made you mad.

10. Information is king. Don't go into battle without knowing what you're up against.

11. How to Lose: Tell your people to do something they can't; promote incapable people; or work your team to death.

12. Miscellaneous: Drag yourself out of bed early and other tips.
